Jet2 Hot Drinks Rule: What Passengers Flying from Luton & Stansted Need to Know

If you're flying Jet2 from London Luton or Stansted and you've made a habit of grabbing a coffee or tea from one of the terminal cafés before boarding — you need to know about this rule before your next trip.

Jet2 does not allow passengers to bring hot drinks or hot food onto its aircraft. That includes anything purchased airside — so your Pret flat white, your Costa latte, your Wetherspoons breakfast tea — all of it needs to be finished before you step onto the jet bridge.

The airline confirmed its policy publicly this week after a passenger asked on social media whether they could bring a drink on board. Jet2 clarified that cold drinks and snacks are fine, but hot beverages are not permitted — "for safety reasons," according to its own website.

What exactly is banned?

Jet2's rule covers:

  • Hot drinks — tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and any other hot beverages purchased in the terminal

  • Hot food — anything warm from a café, restaurant, or food outlet inside the airport, regardless of whether it has a lid or is sealed

Cold drinks, bottled water, canned drinks, and snacks purchased after security can all be brought on board without issue.

Why does Jet2 have this rule?

Jet2 hasn't published a detailed technical explanation, but the stated reason is safety. Hot liquids pose a spill risk during turbulence or at takeoff — a lidded coffee cup is not fully spillproof under aircraft conditions — and hot food can create discomfort for other passengers in a confined cabin.

Ryanair has a similar restriction. easyJet takes a more relaxed approach, allowing hot drinks with a secure lid, but Jet2 draws a firm line regardless of lid or container type.

What this means if you're flying from Luton or Stansted

Both London Luton and London Stansted have a good range of airside cafés and food options — including Costa, Pret, Wetherspoon, and various food courts. It's very easy to pick up a hot drink while waiting to board, not realise the rule applies, and then be asked to bin it at the gate.

A few practical points worth knowing:

Finish before you board. If you're in a café near your gate and your flight is called, either drink up or leave it. Gate staff are expected to enforce the rule — it's not something they typically overlook.

Allow a few extra minutes airside. If a coffee before the flight is part of your routine, factor in time to sit and drink it properly rather than rushing to the gate with a cup in hand.

Hot drinks are available on board. Jet2 sells teas, coffees, and hot chocolates during the flight — so you won't go without. Bear in mind that Jet2 is card-only on board; no cash is accepted at any point during the flight.

Cold drinks are fine. A bottle of water, a juice, a soft drink from the terminal shops — all permitted. The rule is specifically about temperature, not beverages in general.
